It's interesting to paint the same viewpoint from a completely different time of day. It was a challenge to paint during the height of summer in the early afternoon. I used a garden water spray to keep the paints from drying out too quickly, as recommended by an artist friend! The scene shows the bridge opening up to let a large boat go through.

I was attracted to this scene because of the multitude of bright lights and the different viewpoints. Under such lighting conditions landmarks such as HMS Belfast and County Hall become a blurred mix of lights and silhouettes on the right.

It's interesting to paint from the same view whilst under different lighting conditions. This river scene is identical to three other paintings that I made but, even though the time of day is similar, the colours and light and feel are quite different.

In this image the Lloyds Building (appearing in green and blue) is like a smaller family member standing amongst its bigger 'siblings' on Blackfriars Bridge. I always enjoy seeing the disco party boats that often cruise along this stretch of river, and one such boat can can be seen passing by on the left hand side in the picture. Behind it HMS President stands moored alongside the embankment.

This small painting was made in one sitting and was a challenge to paint as I was facing almost directly into the sun. I enjoyed the simplistic results very much because I felt that it conveyed all that it had to convey without getting bogged down with architectural and structural details.
