<image:caption>2024 acrylic on board 16 x 25 cm (6 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches) £375 framed behind glass Reflected artificial light on shiny surfaces and through foliage add an evocative and animated feel to an ordinary street scene, such as this one outside a housing estate in Southwark, south east London. The headlamps of a car that is not in the picture shines on the road surface and wheel hubcaps of parked vehicles in the foreground. For me, road vehicles often replace the presence of human figures in a scene, and they add a sense of proportion in a landscape.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2024 acrylic on board 16 x 25 cm (6 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches) £375 framed behind glass These wheelie bins, synonymous with the refuse firm Biffa, sit in front of a pastel blue wall under a railway arch near London Bridge station. The scene depicts an overcast day, not helped by being situated under the railway arch, but the red and blue elements help to overcome the muted tonal contrasts. <image:caption>2021 acrylic on board 30 x 40 cm (11.5 x 15.5 inches) £750 framed This railway cutting is typical of many such urban locations in London where Tube trains shuffle through scruffy no man’s lands surrounded by various types of city infrastructure and life such as residential blocks and builders yards. I left parts of the painting almost unfinished so as to give it a scruffy quality befitting the scene’s austere atmosphere. The picture features in my blog post Tube Paint. <image:caption>2022 acrylic on board 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inches) £245 framed These wheelie bins were found nestled under a brick railway arch near London Bridge Station. I concentrated on exaggerating the various colours of the composition in the scene, such as the warm electric lighting illuminating strewn pieces of junk and battleship grey of the bins themselves, set against the blue of the brick wall behind. <image:caption>2023 acrylic on board 10 x 15 cm (3 x 4 inches) £245 framed London has several tree lined squares, such as this one in Soho, though hidden as backdrop for these night time wheelie bins. Reflective fluorescent bin bags jut out from black metal bins awaiting disposal. I used a very limited palette of paint for this picture, given that the scene lacks colour and tone. <image:caption>2022 acrylic on board 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inches) £245 framed Much of my artistic approach centres on a sense of place. However, some subjects I like to paint also lend themselves to themselves regardless of where they’re placed, such as wheelie bins and parked vehicles. This painting could be placed anywhere given the anonymity and vagueness of location. The parked vehicles could be situated outside a used car sales centre or a Nissan main dealer, or a fairground car park; the actual location I used is a tourist parking spot along the south coast of England.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2022 acrylic on board 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inches) £245 framed The Regent’s Canal arcs around central London from the Limehouse Basin near the Isle of Dogs in the east to Little Venice and Paddington in the west. Built in 1812 it would have seen many changes over the years to the cityscapes that completely surround it. My nocturne painting was situated near the western end of Islington Tunnel and features the silhouettes of modern office spaces and residential block . My enjoyment of night time scenes was satisfied with the dimly lit narrowboats moored on the left and the various towpath lighting on the right, reflected in the still water below.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2021 acrylic on board 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inches) SOLD Plein air painting has it’s challenges in dimly lit light. I usually carry a portable LED swan neck lamp and the light level can be adjusted so as not to spoil my night vision. This painting, however, benefited from me standing right under a bright street lamp on a bridge over looking the A406 (North Circular Road) during evening rush hour on a cool November. As with my usual approach I tried to limit detail to a minimum where necessary, focusing instead on capturing the bright red rear lights of cars in a slow moving tailback below.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2021 acrylic on board 30 x 40 cm (11.5 x 15.5 inches) £695 framed A sunlit facade with street lamps switching on suggest the golden hour of early evening in this street view of a housing estate in Islington, a small but rather closely built up borough of London. The overall feel of the painting, however, is reminiscent of a sub tropical holiday abroad, heightened probably by the overhanging tree foliage and white soft top convertible car in the foreground (which also remind me of the 80s tv show Miami Vice !) With the many windows on the face of the residential block demanding attention I kept the rendering of such detailing to a painterly minimum, consistent with the rest of the picture.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2019 acrylic on board 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inches) £245 framed This north London residential street scene is close to where I currently live. Painting everyday scenes (or every night in this case) would naturally include domestic neighbourhood locations. I was attracted to this domestic flavoured simplicity: warmly lit windows, parked vehicles illuminated by a nearby street lamp and a deep indigo night sky broken with yoghurt coloured clouds. <image:caption>2019 acrylic on board 15.5 x 20.5 cm (6 x 8 inches) SOLD This village scene in Northwest London sits right under a flight path that leads directly into Heathrow Airport located close by, with large low flying aircraft sitting on the tops of trees and roofs. Sadly, Longford’s future is bleak, with a planned new runway expected to obliterate the village. Many of the landscapes scenes that I have painted over the years have subsequently changed dramatically, but painting this ‘last hurrah’ of Longford is somewhat poignant.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2014 acrylic on board 30 x 40 cm (12 x 15.5 inches) SOLD I almost consider this composition a still life, what with the bins appearing as inanimate objects. This view takes in a residential scene with a modern housing estate (Bream Close) which came as an inspiration to me because of the red brick and triangular roof slopes of the buildings made this scene slightly reminiscent of traditional rustic river landscape paintings, now with a contemporary take. <image:caption>2018 acrylic on board 60 x 80 cm Rivers have often featured n my work over the years, notably scenes of the Thames in London but, every so often, I find interesting waterways away from the capital such as this urban city river scene near Temple Meads in Bristol, UK. I kept the detail of buildings and scenery to a minimum to emphasise the colours and shading of the sky that looms over an influences an equally grey and sombre townscape.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2018 acrylic on board 49.5 x 70 cm (19.5 cm x 27.5 inches) £1,400 framed A building site in Barking in east London gave me inspiration to paint it, with its colour scheme of blue sky, sandy ground and bright fluorescent work barriers. I found the scene quite uplifting, giving me a sense sense of a future landscape being shaped for new communities and lives. The painting features in my blog post ‘In the mix with fluorescent colours’.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2014 acrylic on board 30 x 40 cm (12 x 15.5 inches) SOLD I almost consider this composition a still life, what with the bins appearing as inanimate objects.
